Hi guys can anyone tell me how long do you usually have to wait to see an ammonia spike. I mean if cycling a tank normally takes 30 days or so should i have seen a spike by now as my tank has been running 2 and a half weeks and still nothing. As have said before am using fish to cycle tank which some of you said was not a good idea but they are all healthy and eating fine. I have 2 clowns and a damsel but nothing no spike is this normal !!!!!!
Can i have your advice as guy in my local shop said some tanks don't spike at all is this correct please let me know many thanks.

Ammonia spike's may not happen... if you have very well cycled Live Rock you are starting your system off with. I know that is the case with one of the LFS (Local Fish Store) in my area... their Live Rock is amazingly cycled when you purchase it from them... so very little tank cycling.

You will still have a diatom bloom in your future... as well as the rest of the cycling process... so make sure you keep moving slowly, and continue monitoring your Ammonia, Nitrites & Nitrates.

cakester - do you have live rock in the tank, and if so, was it fully cured before adding? Have you tested for nitrites and nitrates yet? If your ammonia spike was fast, then you might be able to see where you're at by measuring your nitrites and nitrates. When your nitrites are also at zero (along with the ammonia), then you'll be able to introduce a clean-up crew.

What size tank, and how many fish do you have in there currently?

Not seeing ammonia is just fine, you will probably see Nitrate though, that's when the headache starts!!
Ha Ha.
Seriously now, if you move slowly enough and wait long enough you might not see a major spike. If you try to act too fast you might not see anything but the spike!
