I remember reading somewhere that someone did this and was wondering if there was much of a downside to this (save perhaps the embaressment (since i'm a guy) of trying to buy them at the store) do they tear really easy?
i was thinking of maybe layering a few and then putting in some filter media like phosban or something

I use them to hold my carbon and phosphate when i decide to run it... seems to work just fine. Of course I just use my old ones after I tear holes in them, no need to waste a good pair!

I tried using my underwear but that was just embarrassing.:D My wife's nylons have worked great for carbon, covering mushroom and xenia frags onto rocks, temp prefilter, and others. As a filter sock, the holes are a bit big for all but the largest detritus.
