I waz wondering if its a good idea to run air through an airstone into the water? In the sump. Reason im asking is because i have read that the oxygen levels in a sw tank doesnt have very much O2. Does anyone use them and if so, do you notice a difference? What kind of stone do you use? I mean, we use them in the buckets while mixing the water, why not leave one going in the sump?

high o2 levels lead to more algae growth. and depending on where you put it you would be risking micro-bubbles in your DT. the surface aggitation that you have helps the exchange rate. i dont feel that it would be nessisary. my $0.02

You can try it, but I don't think its necessary if you have enough agitation in the display tank. Most setups with sumps that I've seen is very oxygenated.

The water entering your sump becomes aggitated with enough O2 by the time it returns back to your DT. No need for supplementing O2. As stated it will promote algae growth.

I don't know about it increasing the Algae growth as they primarily consume Nitrates and Phosphates (daylight hours) and typically the fuge section is already highly saturated with Oxygen from going through overflow plumbing plunging into first chamber, being injected through the Skimmer, over-under-over baffles and finally into the fuge section. The one thing it would certainly do is to increase your maintenance by creating an abundance of salt spray/creep in your sump area even damaging your lighting if not covered. Then more than likely adding micro-bubbles back into your DT. My $.06 worth... lol

Cheers, Todd

I thought plants (which algae is) use carbon dioxide and released oxygen versus us that use oxygen and release carbon dioxide so therefore I couldn't see increasing oxygen really promoting algae growth. With that said, I agree that using an air stone isn't necessary. You should be fine as it is.
