So I have this swc hang on that I am breaking in on my little 12g nano have a biger tank in the works bit here is the deal the pump is realy hot and not sure but seems to be raising temp in the tank????? I put a temp gun to it and it was from 130 to 150 is this normal for an external pump temp in tank went from 79 to 82 but today the house was 75 to 78 there is a heater in the tank and avrage temp has always been 77 to 79

i assume your speaking of the new mini hot from swc,
well, the pump is external so yes, it will run hotter than a submerged skimmer, but that does seem pretty hot...
and because it's 12g, that's why it's affecting the temp by a few degrees.
also, it would behoove you tro try to keep the internal room temp about 70 or so, instead of 78,
and if your really worried about it , get a small $10 kmart clap on fan and blow some cool air on the pump.

You'll have a very hard time controlling the heat issue, in 12 gallons of water. That pump/skimmer combination is made to work, efficiently, in 50-90 gallons of water. It's similar to putting a pump in a 5 gallon bucket of water. If the pump is over rated, for 5 gallons of water, it's going to heat the water up, to levels that you cannot control.

With a tank as small as a 12g, skimming can be replaced with frequent water changes. This will keep it cooler.
In any marine tank, stability is your best friend.

well overnight I left a fan blowing on it and temp came down.. but sounds like breaking it in on the little tank is a bad idea.was tryin to get ahead of things because all thats left to start the larger tank is lighting and a little more rock.. I am trying hard with this patince thing and will learn... thanks for all the good info.. did not realize that those pumps run so hot out of water.
