Last week I picked up 2 pearly jawfish from the LFS hoping to become a pair...in the tank (which I asked to have them held together) they laid right next to each other and all the way up to when I put them in the tank. One was smaller with a softer face and the bigger one just looked like a male. Well they made 2 burrows a few rocks away from each other and I couldn't find the bigger one but when I fed them tonight they both emerged from the hole together. Does this mean they're a pair?

Very true, open tops and jawfish are a tried and trued recipe for disaster. You can count on the jawfish moving around quite a bit in the first few weeks that they are in the aquarium. I've kept them in the past and found that they will frequently have several burrows that they can bounce around between. I did at one time have three jawfish that all lived under the same large, flat-bottomed rock. they each had a seperate hole that their faces stuck out of, but when I looked up at the bottom of the tank (from inside the stand) it seemed that it was one large cave inside.
