Thanks a lot! do I keep the pH probe on the main tank or the sump?

Doesn't matter. I prefer sump. Nice to keep things hidden and out of site.

i would go for keeping it in the sump as well.....

ballasts and motors can effect ph meters, put your water in a cup and get at least 10 feet away from your tank,
my vote is for pinpoint brand

Most probes are shielded so lighting and pumps are usually not a problem but I would just calibrate the meter at the place you intend to keep it. For the most accurate place to measure, well of course its the tank but its ugly unless you build some sort of probe box.

I think that depends on the meter being used. The pinpoint ones have been known to read funny when powered by a/c. I think that has something to do with people running them on a circut loaded with pumps and vho's. The cure is to wrap the cord through a circular magnet a few times.
