I have had this gobie for a couple of days, this morning it finally came out to eat, I see little darker areas of the fish, is this normal? It is not bright yellow all over. yellow gobie.jpg

thank you, I was watching his pacing around for a couple of days, he is sitting around calm now on the bottom of the tank, observing, he did eat this morning, and seems ok behavior now. Do I really need to get a pistol shrimp for his burrow?

The Yellow Watchman Goby does not have to have a pistol shrimp, but it's a cool relationship to observe. However, be aware that the Pistol Shrimp will do A LOT of burrowing and digging. If your live rock is sitting directly on your sand, this digging can cause a rock slide. This is one reason it's better to place rocks directly on the tank bottom. I found this out, the hard way, when I awoke to most of the rock, in my old 75, sitting against the front glass. Luckily the glass held! My Pistol shrimp had decided to burrow underneath the main rock structure!

Also, Pistol Shrimp will grab small frags and pull them into their burrow. They use it to shore up the sides of their burrows. However, that doesn't help you accept that your frags are being stolen...lol. They also have a habit of burying corals that are on the sand bed, near it's burrow.

Here's an old pic of the pair I used to have.

W have experienced the same thing with our pistol shrimp as Michael had described. My opinion is no pistol shrimp unless you have lots of tank floor space. Ours is smaller at 36"x15" and he wreaks havoc all the time digging and burying and we can't get him out without pulling the while tank apart. All I'm saying is it is a cool relationship to watch but the shrimp can be a destructive little bugger.

thanks for the replies, My rocks are directly on the glass bottom, my tank is 72' and 24' i think it would probably be ok, Maybe get one, I would like to get a diamond back watchman gobie for the sand sifting qualities , same thing with him too, then, my guess.
