At o2manyfish's Kids Free Frag event on 12/18, I took some video of some of the pipefish in his 360 gallon system. Dave has had some pipefish in his sytem months and others weeks. Everyone I've seen was active and looked healthy.
Notice the red in the tail area. Whenever the pipefish would 'find' each other, this would turn bright red. Anyway, very cool fish to watch.
