Pump head pressure?

So when a pump talks about head pressure does it only matter how much is going straight up or the full length of the return pipe? Mine goes up 1' straight 1' then up 3' to the first return then over 3' to the second return. So I only have 4' going up but I have 8' of pipe overall. I am trying to get about 550-650 gal/h
