My external returning pump's generating more heat lately that heats up the tank (150gal) to 82F. Any advice?

You may need to clean the pump itself, I would suggest taking it apart & doing a through cleaning! My best guess from the information you provided.

Where is the pump located? If closed up in the stand, then you may need to vent the stand. Also, a fan blowing on the pump will keep it cooler as well :)

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try vent the stand and a fan first cuz it's hard to unhook and take it apart.

problem is if it was running ok & getting worse suddenly, then that means you have something causing it to do so & as in restrictions, air or flow. Venting & fans are great but seems like your first question leads to another problem. One more thing, most external pumps have fans that cool the motor, check that also!
What are the specs of the pump?
