So this may be an out there question, but can I purify natural sea water? Right now I get ro/di from a lfs, but the Puget Sound is 5 milers from my house, and when I buy a purifying unit is it crazy to think that I can just grab a few buckets of water from the sound and send it through a purifier?

Thanks,

Lee

Its a bit of a toss up. With the water from up here you will need to bring up the salinity, then test and adjust whatever levels or too low (Mg/cal/alk). The you need to be carefull with the nutrient content, so give it a test for P and N. And lastly is going to be for pathagens/parasites, so all in all a bit of work. The best thing for the bugs and stuff would be a good UV and then most of the adjustments for elements could be done with salt mix, but best to take a peek (test wise) for those that need more.

Sometimes NSW is more work than just mixing a batch of salt mix and ro/di water. So many things to consider as Mojo pointed out. Also, keep in mind, what you collect this week, may not be the same as what you get next week (even in terms of salinity) so testing every batch of NSW will be vital. :)

I couldn't find too much on people doing this, so I figured it would be a bit of a process. I didn't really think about all of what mojo said, I figured I would only have to worry about pollutants. Maybe I will just get a few more 5 gallon containers and drive to the Seattle Aquarium to get water there.
Thanks again,

Lee
