Okay guys,
I know it been stated between 4-6 weeks quarintine time for fish. Is this really required if the fish looks great after two weeks. It's eating great and swims normally, not anything, looks great. What does everyone think. Wait two 4 more weeks or put him in if he looks good after 2?

David

yes, unless you want all risk having all your fish dead it's a great idea to wait it out. I made the mistake of not using QT and then had all my fish wiped out by ich that didn't show up for about 4-5 weeks after I introduced the new fish. Won't do that again. I think Lee recommends at least 6 weeks.

It's more like 8 weeks because you start counting after treatment medication and watching for anything else. PraziPro first cause most fish have some kind of intestinal bug or gill fluke that may start to be symptomatic of ick (rapid breathing, pale color, poor appetite). Then if ick does pop sometimes after 14days in the QT you can immediately use Cupramine (copper tx). Seek Lee's advise notes on QTing. It's not worth making your display tank go fallow for 10week just because you thought the fish was clean. Learn from the errors of those who've been there, done that.

I recently started a new tank, 120g peninsula with a 50g fuge and 45g sump and took a chance adding livestock without quarantine since my lfs qarantines for 3 weeks beofore they sell. it took about 5 to 6 weeks before I noticed the ich on my tang and from there it exploded. So thats like 8-9 weeks total before visible ich. in the end I lost my kole tang, coral beauty angel, and even a clown and 2 damsels which are pretty hardy fish. and now have to run my tank fallow untill basically christmas....so yeah, thats my 2 cents.

Parasites and the common cold aren't to different. It's always around untill the immunity is worn down or is latent --in the gills-- un-seen just waiting for opportunity to mature when we least expect it. Unfortunately there are no guaranteed external processes that are reliable beyond what we ourselves know in "our own" QT regimen practices. No short-cuts either otherwise suffer losses, if not now, then eventually. Yes, a very difficult pill to swallow, heal-up my friend, you will recover.
