Question about power heads

I have a 29 gal reef tank and am currentley running a cheap walmart regent powerhead, it works well, but I also have a Maxi Jet 1000 sitting around that I would like to put in place of the cheaper regent. But Im afraid it might be to powerfull for such a small tank. What do you think?

My first saltwater tank was a standard sized 29 gallon reef tank. I had 3 MJ 1200s in it. It had a good amount of flow but it wasn't too much. 2 were in each back corner facing towards the middle of the front glass and one was on the back glass, lower in the tank, pointing up and towards the front. The rule of thumb for a reef tank is 10X - 20X flow per hour. This would equate to 290 - 580 gph flow in your sized tank. I was pushing closer to 800.

Thanks for all the advice, I put the Maxi-jet in and it really moved the water around so I got worried and took it out. Looks like Ill be putting it back-in

Just mess with and adjust it to a point where it's not kicking sand up. Also, what type of tank do you have? Corals? What kinds? Anemone? Clams? This might be important with flow. If you have clams, make sure they aren't getting to much flow on them.

I had a tank only 9 gals more than you have (38gal) and I had about 4,000 gph of flow in it so I think you'll be more than fine using the maxijet

Are you sure the PH you have is a Maxi Jet? You say it's a 1000, do you mean 1200? If it's a 1200 it's only pushing 300 gph which means that it should be fine. If anything, you might think about adding another.

Its a Maxi Jet 1000, I havent seen any 1000s lately maybe they stopped making them? but it says 291 gph. I put it in the tank and everything is looking good.

I need to get some new mounting brackets for it, does anybody know where I can just get the bracket and not the pump?

Huh, I never heard of a MJ 1000. I'd add the other PH also if you haven't already, you'll be happier with the the overall flow.
