Would 50 pounds be enough for 36 gallons?

Remember to leave some room in your tank so your fish can swim around. LOL
Sounds like more than enough. The pounds per gal thing is over rated. Depends on Bio-load and porosity of the rock.

I would say 50 lbs of any rock in a 36 gallon is overkill. I use the Real Reef stuff in my tank and I like it. It's really easy to drill and epoxy to make some great aquascape and I would bet that if you choose your pieces carefully and really plan/research for aquascape designs that you like, you could get away with 15-20 lbs max. If you are trying to bulk up your bio filter, you can put some rock in your sump if that is an option but I'd use the least pretty rock I could find for that.
Other thing to consider is the they will be releasing the new 'branch rock' in the next couple of months. I'm reserving a section of my tank for that ;)
