Does anybody know how I can get rid of red algae without adding chemicals to my reef tank?

VG can you be a little more specific as to what type of red algae you are dealing with? Cyano, or red slime type or macro algae?

red hair algae

if you are talking about red hair algae... I just bought a yellow tang and he ate them all within one week...

Re: red algae removal

I just picked up a copy of this book:

Algae: A Problem Solver Guide
by Julian Sprung
ISBN 1883693020

It's an excellent resource for identifying, eliminating and preventing the recurrence of all sorts of algae problems.

Is this a new tank? I've found that in many cases, 'time' ends up being the answer. That and the Sprung book may help you.

If it isn't gone by now, and it started in 2003, the OP has real problems.. LOL

I know this is a old thread but I thought I would add what I've been doing to help reduce it. I've recently been siphoning it from my DT into a filter sock in my sump, it hasn't got rid of it but it is a good way to export nutrients.

When you filter it out thru a filter sock, you don't remove the nutrients, just the red slime result, it is in the water column

I disagree. The algae locks up nutrients, not removing it means it releases those nutrients as part of its life cycle. You are removing nutrients, just like you would be with cheato.. its just not as effective.
