Refugium out of an Aqua Clear 500 HOB

I was wondering if it would be worth trying to modify my AQ500 power filter to hold a ball of cheato for my 55 gallon tank? I'm thinking it would probably be too small to make a noticeable difference in water quality. But I was thinking it may worth it for a place for pods to populate. Should I consider working on this for after my tank cycles or would it just be a waste of electricity?
