Refugium & ph

I was reading in another thread about a refugium affecting the ph in the reef system. I likely sound a little dumb here but I am not sure I understand the connection with the ph. Can someone explain exactly what changes a refugium causes on ph and why.

Its not the refugium itself, its the photo period for the macro algae in the refugium.
