I have been reading that you should switch out your carbon stage on a regular basis to protect the membrane. I don't make a lot of RO, so rather than buy top of the line carbon filters which I will have to switch out long before they were designed for, would there be any drawback to using the type of filters sold at Menards/Lowes for my carbon stage? I use a 1 micron sediment filter from filterguys.

If you don't use much RO water then your carbon should last as long as it would if you were making water weekly or daily.

That is what I thought too. I emailed the filterguys, and they suggested it be changed out every 6 to 9 months, but then they're in the business of selling filters. I have not noticed any change in performance from my ro unit.

Your carbon block is removing chloramine. Getting a chloramine test kit will tell you a little about how often you need to change the filters. Also you dont have to buy the carbon blocks, you can buy a refillable gac cartrige that cost less to refill.
