I have a 60 cube with a 20 sump,i am using a 10 gallon for top-off water that is added with a switch. My question is should the water be aerated sitting there?Question 2 from this set-up how could i add kalk or limewater mixture.

You can just put kalk in and stir it up. You will need a lid for your water storage container. No aeration needed. Make sure there is a failsafe if your going to use kalk. Two floats or somthing like that on your ato.

i have a 5g container for my top-off... i use about 5tsp of kalk powder in my jug..everyone's needs are different, so you will need to figure out how much you need to keep your Ca levels in check..i would start with one or two tsp and work my way up...also, make sure you have a lid..the open air will cause the Ca to precipitate out...

Does the lid need to be air tight?I am using the glass lid for the 10 gallon that has a opening for a hose.Right now i use about 5 gallons a week for top-off.If i put kalk in the tank and stirred it up would it be ok?or should i mix it up in a 5 gallon jug and siphon it in?

the lid needs to be close to air tight, but not all the way.. i drilled a hole in my 5g container lid just big enough for a tiny hose to go through..there is a valve on the back of my 5g container to let air in.. it has to have some air or the container will implode...if i am not mistaken, i think you should only mix up a weeks worth at a time..also, i am not sure if you are talking about putting the kalk directly in your display tank or in your mixing container....kalk had to be dosed very slowly(drip) into your display tank...you will need a topoff controller or float switch setup for that.. you can't just pour it into your tank.

Is that because the valve will get a buildup on the outlet, and possibly get stuck open?

If its gravity fed with a float valve, your asking for trouble with kalk. If its electrontric with a float switch you asking for trouble running a single switch system with kalk.

i have a single switch on my JBJ doser... it never comes on when it is supposed to... it has to have crazy flow hitting it for it to click "on"... i have to come turn it on all the time because my water gets low....it has buildup all over it that keeps it from coming on
