There is thread on here about the backgrounds that can be bought for tanks that look like different types of rocks. I was wondering if anyone has ever thought of making their own? I was thinking about this and thought maybe you could hide a spray bar or returns this way. maybe make them look like little caves but there would actually be water coming from or going into them. What do you guys think? You could use live rubble rock or argocrete (sp) like they use to make live rock on GARF or some other materials depending on whats in your tank.

They do this a lot in cichlid tanks. I don't have a specific thread on here but you can check out Cichlid-forum.com.

You could also look at http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/nftt/index.htm although I don't think his came out that great. Or http://kotisivu.mtv3.fi/jmjokine/malawi/construction.html which I thought did look pretty cool.

I wish I had the thread on reef central that peeked my interest in this but I don't, you could do a search on there though, probably for foam background or insulation foam.

In reading several threads in different places it seems that this is very do-able. On the thread http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/nftt/index.htm that you posted kimoyo it seems like this might be one of the easiest ways to do it. An it looks pretty reef safe. I love the hidden returns and though I am not too crazy about how his came out it does make me very hopeful as to what I can do to mine.

There was an awesome thread on reefcentral.com with a few people who did it very very well, it looked great. I wish I had bookmarked it, I thought I did, it was were i got those links I gave you before. I was going to do a search for it earlier but the search was disabled for me.
