Does it matter what was in a barrel as long as it was food? I bought a couple of barrels that I thought had olives in them but my wife thinks they smell like Jalapeno's. Could have been jalapeno stuffed olives, I suppose. Anyway, I'm having trouble getting rid of the smell, and I'm wondering if there is anything that can be bad for your tank, for instance if jalapeno oil is in the plastic. I've tried soaking it in vinegar water and rinsing it well. It's not real strong, but I can still smell it.

as long as the barrel is classified as food grade, I dont think it matters...it will take some time to remove the smell..might need to let the vinegar soak a day or so before rinsing it completely out.

even then, I dont think it will harm anything...I had a 55g that had Pepsi in it..took about a month for the smell to completely dissipate. (but I still use it and all was well).

I just went to home depot and got 2 33 gal trash cans . Rised with alittle bleach water and ran them , no problems.

Hmm, no idea if that would cause a problem, i couldn't imagine it would though. As long as food is all that was in it.

Who knows, maybe your fish will love you for it because those sound delicious =)

Put some watter in it and let it sit a day or two , then drink some.......See what happens. You wouldn't put anything in your reef that you wouldn't take your self , would you????
