So i am starting a new build. I picked up the tank a few days ago. Not sure on total volume, but it measures 36x20x15 with 3/8" glass. Man it is a beast. It is gonna be the perfect upgrade from my current 29 Gallon BioCube.

I only got the tank, so i will be needing to construct a stand. I know a few of ya'll out there can do some awesomeoness with woodworking.. so i am looking for advice, tips or any kind of help with designing the stand. I wanna make sure that it will be stable first and foremost, so that is why i am here...

Now i have never gone as far as building any furniture so i am sure i will have plenty of questions.

I have been playing with drawings all day, which prolly has hinder'd my work for the day, cuz i keep grabbing this pad of paper haha shh dont tell the boss.. gettin paid to plan my stand is awesome! haha

first lets start by showing a pic of the tank..

now as far as planning stuff for the stand, how should i start? should i start by planning on the structure.. like building with 2x4's? I just wanna make sure that it will be sturdy..

any help / tips would be awesome.
thanks everyone in advance.

Your design should take in consideration on the tools you have to work with. If you have a table saw and a router I would go the plywood route. You will gain 3'' under of room inside the stand. much more room for a sump.
If you only have a skillsaw and a drill I would suggest a using 3/4'' X 3 1/2'' frame skinned with 3/8'' plywood, and trimmed with hardwood of your choice.

Thanks peppie, I got a buddy with a workshop, so I will double check what he has goin on. He is just on vacation for 20 days... As far as the structure.. 2x4's? Wood glue and nails? I am trying to find the best way to start. I am worried about sturdyness.. so I wanna make sure I understand what it takes to build a very sturdy structure.. I don't wanna have to rip anything apart to start over..

Structure. Plywood, glue, screws. Get the 2x4s OUT Of YOUR HEAD. It is way way over kill. they also eat up valuable space inside the cabinet.
If you need help in designing a stand you can PM me for a phone # so we can talk.

Thanks Dave!

I will get you a PM out, When i think of gluing plywood together it didnt seem to stable, that is why i assumed that was the exoskeleton to the 2x4's ..

i seen the stand you posted on shane's DIY LED thread.. and that looked awesome... you got some skills!

thanks again...
