So far I have been pretty lucky with my reef tanks. I have had no major loses or had any major pest problems. I am starting to trade and buy more corals, so I decided it was time to stop playing Russian Roulette and set up a quarantine tank.

I traded in some corals at the LFS and came home with a glass 20 gallon, a Cascade 300 hob filter, and a 96 watt quad 50/50 pc light (I already had the ballast). I had the egg crate, pvc, and fittings laying around from another project. I also had a mini jet for added circulation.

Today I got my corals in through the mail, one acropora, one acan, one zoo rock. The quarantine tank has only been running for 1 day, so the biofilter has not been established yet. I plan on doing small water changes daily (maybe 2%) from my display tank to keep the water quality up. I put two shelves in so I could increase the light to the coral by raising them up a shelve. The shelves will also help with getting the pest separated from the corals. I am not sure about the duration to quarantine. I will have to do more reading. The pictures were taken 10 minutes after adding the corals. I have already noticed a couple of hitchhikers. Two small crabs. They are white in color and have large claws. Anybody have an idea of what they are and if they are reef safe?

I am pretty new to reef keeping (about 2 years). This is my first attempt at quarantining corals. I have read the threads about red bugs, nudibranchs, and starfish. Any advice on other pests/problem, setup, duration, would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks,

Jason

In the thread, Coral Quarantine, Anthony posted some information on QT for corals.

The crabs look like Acro crabs. Just be sure if your acros have red bugs, and you treat in QT, that you remove these guys. They won't make it through an Interceptor treatment.

My own personal experience when removing corals from QT, I use a magnifying glass and do a once over on the corals, just to make sure there isn't anything I have missed. I also remove the SPS from the rocks or plugs they came on, especially if there are any undesirable algaes or aiptasia lurking about.

Thanks Nikki

Great info!
