I bought a "male" (at least thats what I was told) Anthias on the 19th of this month. I brought him home and acclimated him like I am supposed to, as soon as I let him out of the plastic bag he darted beneath the rocks. He didn't have time to decide if he even had a reason to be afraid. He has been under the rocks since. I know he is still alive because I can see him. Unfortuately I don't know if he is eating. Can anybody tell what might be wrong with him????? and what I need to do for him.
125 gallon, 2-400 watt mh 2-VHO's T12, 125 lbs live rock, soft and hard corals, rabbit, mandarin, PJ cardinal, chromis, blenny, goby, 2 cleaner shrimp, pistol shrimp, snails

Anthias should be QT (all fish should) but they are real hard to get eating, especially a single one. My advise would be to take him out and put him in a QT tank and get him eating. If you can't do that then money is he's going to stay in hiding and die. I've had plenty of anthias to know this, so if you can't do that then take him back to where you bought him, cuz he will not make it! One of the reasons anthias are hard fish to keep!

You don't think that if I get him some females that would bring him out? If not then I will definately get him out. Thank you.

well he might start talking to the females and telling them ....hey baby how you doing or you're just one scary dood to look at in the eye ;) .

no if i was you i'd definetly put him in a quarantine tank and see how he does :)

what type of anthias is it?

The only way I've seen anthias go strait into the dt and make it is when an established anthias was already in there. Even that sometimes is iffy!

Another concern is feeding. Once u get them eating u have to feed quite often, 4 + times a day. You have to keep up on wc and have a great skimmer. That's one of the huge problems with them, they have a crazy matabalism and will most likely die from starvation. This is why QTing them is soooo important!

Thank you all for your info, I am so greatful for the help. I went out in the livingroom to give my husband the bad news, turned and glanced at the tank and there he was!!!! I was so excited, but I think I scared him and under he went again. He has since decided that he just might like it and has befriended my Chromis. He ate last night and this morning.
We have a Nautilus TE by Kent Marine skimmer in a 100 gal sump. I'm not sure what type of Anthias, he is pink on the head to mid-way then yellow to his tail.
Thank you again,
Laurie
