hello everyone, i have a reef tank with live rock and i bought a mega sump 2 from all glass i was told to leave the bio balls in there and other people told me to take them out what should i do? and if i take them out, should i replace them with some type of filter material?

nothing just take out the bio balls. If you can convert it into a refugium that will be great for your reef.

what do i replace them with?

If you have enough live rock, then you don't want to use the bioballs.

I'm assuming this is a already setup system that you are adding a sump to?

If you are it is a good time to arange the sump for all you needs. Consider adding partitions and baffles.
You can and should (my opinion) add a partition for a refugium.
Checkout the link for some really good info.

Anything in place of bio-balls acts as the same thing because the conditions are still the same...A wet/dry environment. The bio-balls themselves aren't the problem but where they are placed. If you were to put live rock in place of the bio-balls with water trickling over them, you'd be in the same boat so as suggested, best bet is to remove the bio-balls (if not going fish only) and convert the wet/dry into a sump/fuge where you don't have a wet/dry environment which could cause any potential issues down the road. Just my 2 cents :)
