i ususally have the water softener turned off as i can't use the softened water in my koi pond.

will i prolong the life of my rodi membranes by using the water softener pre rodi unit? seems like it would. my unit is a whole house water softener with a big block of AC and resins.

my tapwater is hard. about 450 TDS,

Carl

Carl - definately use it if you have one. Your tapwater is about as great as mine - lol. I'm running TDS of almost 500 with the water softened. Here is a similar thread I had on the subject: Water Softener with RO/DI?

I agree...use it if you got one...the softener removes lots of minerals and such that will shorten membrane life. I run my RO/DI unit after the water softener, and I still get optimal pressure in the RO/DI unit....
