Im currently looking to upgrade my sump and skimmer setup. Ive been looking at the life reef systems but have been reading a lot that they have old technology. What would the new technology be? Also what would you recommend and warn against?

I have a 265g DT FOWLER. Lightly stocked right now but would like to go heavier using most of the space under my tank for the sump. I do expect to use a skimmer that is external, hight is no issue the skimmer will be sitting next to my tank.

well, for a 265g FOWLR external skimmer, there are a couple skimmers i'd recommend;
SKIMZ SM 252 MONZTER E SERIES - EXTERNAL PROTEIN SKIMMER - AquaCave
or cone version:
SKIMZ SK 252 KONE E SERIES - EXTERNAL PROTEIN SKIMMER - AquaCave

and these are great too;

you could also build your own skimmer and power it with ceramic fine pore airstones and xlarge air pump, and make it cone or cylinder, or square or pyramid shaped... :)
but you could match the same power for less if you could build your own.
