I've been racking my brain the past week about not only moving my tank from its current position but also adding a 10g sump to it.

My Dilemma:

I have a stable tank weather i like it or not (i do like it).
I don't even wanna breathe the wrong way on my tank because I'm so happy with how it is. But where it is now is not safe and is not great for maintenance.

My Questions:

First, Is this a logical move and upgrade?
What changes can i expect from this move and what steps need to be taken?
What is the Right way to go about moving a 10g tank so the bottom doesn't break out when i try to get it our of there?
What type of things must i do before adding a sump to this system?


Also:

I plan on DIY'n my stand and custom light holder.... I've been sketching for 3 straight days and i think I've got a nice clean design. I will start a thread for that in the DIY forum soon here i think.

More volume is always logical IMO and if the tank has to move and is really stable, then it shouldn't cause any problems. With the tank only being a 10 gals though and depending on how far it needs to move, I'd just drain some of the water to prevent splashing and move everything together. I moved my 38gal cube half full across the room by myself just dragging the whole stand across my wife's new tile with the tank on it:lol: I didn't want to tear it all down and said I'm move it altogether and let the stand support the weight of the tank to not break any seals and it was fine. Just a thought..If that's not doable, then just get something to hold all the water in and place everything in there and make the swap. You shouldn't have any problems IMO at all once nothing is exposed to air too long.

will the bottom break out in your opinion with no water just 3/4" of sand and 15-20lbs of lr?
i could drain all the water leave everything how it is...(besides the fish) then add water once moved

I have a 10 gal nano reef also and I moved it all at one time with the help of another person and it's a $10 cheapo tank with no probs.

Moving a glass tank with anything inside of it is a big no no. The seals on the tank are not meant to be stressed in such a way.

My suggestion would be to purchase a new tank and drill it and make a sump. Then slowly move your old set up to your new one.

this is what worries me .... i dont want to re-cycle my existing tank by moving into a new one... i'm afraid it will take a long time to get to the stable point where i'm at

I agree...Very risky. You typically don't want to move the tank alone with anything in it. It can easily break the seals. However, if you can lift the stand with the tank on it, that is fine as it won't put any pressure on the seals

the stand needs to go too is another issue... it's a 5 foot tall cabinet that is tilting slightly and i think it's IKEA

anyway... i might just have to go through with a new tank ...

You'll be fine. No seals are going to bust. The only thing you have to worry about is setting it back down. Do that very slowly.
