Aloha,

I would like to build a mini-reef of species native to the south pacific islands. I have been looking for any resources on species, fish, invertarates, corals, etc., that would work well together from that region.

I am cycling my 26Gal tank with 35# of live rock, Fiji and some tonga branch and 20# of live sand, (about 3 weeks now). Any books, sites or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo nui loa,

The South Pacific is a big area ;)

Unless you're looking for a fish or coral species that is only native to one or two spots, like the Banghai cardinals or the expensive angel fish found at Christmas Island (can't remember the name of that fish right now!) it's going to be extremely difficult to be able to tell exactly where the species originated. If your LFS or online supplier is not also an importer, they'll have to rely on the wholesaler to tell them which region the coral or fish came from, and with the volume coming and going in a large wholesaler, they may not keep track for retailers.

I just play it safe and divide them into Atlantic or Pacific ;)
