just found my tank fully engulfed with this spider web looking stuff , it wasn't there a hour ago now it's all over the place, what is it and how can I get rid of it , it looks nasty!! my camra wont pick it up or I would post a pict

Can't say for sure without seeing it, but it doesn't sound good. Could be coral slime from irritation or another source. In cases where that much is produced so quickly, it could be a devastating event as well. Only time it ever happened to me is when a light fell in the sump of my 180, and all the corals immediately started spitting out mucus. No matter what it is, my suggestion is to remove as much as possible and do a good water change. Get pictures and test your water if possible.

It could also be some sort of invertibrate spawning event. Snails, bristleworms, clams and lots of other creatures are capable of spewing thousands of eggs and loads of "egg fertilizer", and usually one doing it triggers others.

Think I got it , I had to fix a rock that was wobbling and pissed off the flower pot , wow did a 1/2 change big difference do another 10 tomorrow when things settle
thanks , that stuff freaked me out lol

Glad it was all taken care of and no casualties I hope.
And by the way....Welcome to RF. Glad to have you here. Would love to see pics of your system sometime. Tell us a little more about your tank. How long have you been keeping a saltwater tank?

this is a pict with the flower pot , and frog spawn haven't gotten any with new corals yet due to a camera that takes bad picts,
its a 37 gal bow front 3 500 power heads 2 are going to be replaced , 150 penguin bio wheel , 150 octipuss skimmer stock lighting , ordering a new glass top and better lights for the coral
the second pict gives idea what corals are but they were rearanged a bit

Very Nice,
Welcome to RF
It seem you are doing something right!!!! LOL

How long has it been running????

a little over 5 months , had a saltwater 25+ years ago so I still have a few tricks up my sleeve
and yes I'm the first to admit a lot has changed so I'm a bit rusty yet

Yea I had a fish only tank about 20 yrs ago, when the under gravel filter was state of the art. LOL
I couldnt believe the changes in tech when I stared back up a couple of years ago. I had to read for 6 mos before I understood what every thing did. LOL

Your tank looks great! On the topic of your original post, my first thought was the mucous feeding strands that are secreted by the vermetid snails. They can often become a nuissance and irritate corals, but are commonly found in the reef aquarium. So if you see them again, check to see if the filiments are attached to a curly tube attached to your rock or coral skeleton. :)

does it look like this?
