square vs round cylinder skimmer

Nope, not really. If anything, maybe the round would have a little less turbulence, but not by much...

I think most people end up with square skimmers because of the fact that they're home made, and its less expensive to buy flat sheets than a round cylinder.
 
Also. AFAIK round cylinders require less hands on glueing to mass produce skimmers and reactors for commercial use. YOu shouldnt have any performance problems if you DIY a project with four sides. :)
 
I bought a used DIY square 4 foot tall skimmer about 8 years ago from a LFS and it works just dandy. Keeps on a tickin' as long as the pump works.
