Starting over with 3 fish...

I have a 34 gallon tank with 3 fish, the tank is so over run with aptista every inch of rock and sand is covered with them, I want to start over with new sand and rock. I have a 20 gallon tank that is empty, I was think of filling it with the water from the current tank and adding the infested rock of course a heater but what else would I need in the 20 gallon to keep the fish alive for the 6 to 8 weeks it takes the get the 34 gallon to the point where I can put the fish back. What should I use for water flow? What about filtration? The 34 gallon is a RSM so it is all in one and I may need to buy a few things to get the right conditions in the 29 gallon.

Any thoughts are welcome.

If it is just a Fowlr enough flow to keep the water from being stangnant, a backpak filter and a light.
