Stopping Star Polyps

I have star polyps that are growing into other corals. I would like to cut them back. Do I scrape them off of the rock they are growing onto? Man these things spread like wild fire!

Or cut with a blade and peel them up off the stuff.

I have a plastic glass scraper that i took the pole off of to do the job. get the purple mat or they will be back in no time. i have a few spots that i scraped down to rock that have stayed bare for a month but they always spread back. try not to damage the polyps when you are removing them. they release this whitish fluid that can't be good to the other corals. although mine around the mats don't seem to react when i am working on the mats.
