My NW-150 Octopus skimmer suddenly decided to run so wet it fills the collection cup in about 20 seconds.

The adjustment bar is as high as it can go (it is on a 20 gallon tank)

I had to unplug it, what are some factors that might cause this?

(Water level is eight inches in sump.... same as before)

Only thing i have changed is 5 gallons of water yesterday.

something get in your change water? container manage to get some soap residue of some sort in it? I've had this problem with HOB skimmers occasionally when I feed mussles, something in their slime makes the skimmer go nuts. Would probably let it sit for a day and retry.

Must have been the water change. I just plugged it back in after about six hours sitting and seems to be fine.

You either put something (conditioner) into the water, or something was put into the tank, or sprayed in the house that got in to the tank to increase the surface tension of the water.

If I am reading this right, that would be your problem. Lower the adjustment bar for a drier skimmate. My optimum skimmate occurs when I set the bar so that the internal water level is around 1/2 inch from the bottom of the black ring on the collection cup.
