Sump cleaning

How often and how do you clean the scum on the bottom of your sump?

Once a month usually.

I'll clean the drain section, and stir up whatever the chaeto drops on the sand in the fuge using my hand and simply suck the water out w/a Powerhead.

I try and vacuum it out at every water change.

I use to vaccum mine every water change as well which use to be once to twice a week. Detritus is detritus so if left anywhere too long will pose a problem so I removed it with my water changes as well like Martin (Finn)

My goby has done his job and now the detritus is on the bottom of the sump not in the sandbed.

i did a water change, and then i started messing with the sump and the next thing i know im harvesting cheto and cleaning my sump...

What are you guys using to vacuum sand?

No vacuuming.....

just harvest the macro aglae, clean the powerhead for the skimmer, clean the return pump intake basket. clean the glass a little....

i have a little bit of sand that gets stirred' i turn the sump off when i do this so the nastys dont go up....
