Which Tangs are ok to mix and which ones are not?

I have a Hippo Tang in my 75g right now. Is it ok to add a Tomini Tang of a smaller size? thanks!

And just for future references, are there any Tang Compatibility Charts/Threads out there? also, I'd be interested to know which wrasses are compatible as well.

how big is your blue tang? blue tang is a peaceful tang, tomini is a semi-agressive tang. wrasse is compatible with the tangs, they don't fight.

i have two blue hipo tang and a tomini tang in my tank right now. they all get along great. all together i have 10 tangs in my 360 gallon tank. i also have a male and female naso's. two yellow tangs, 1 big clown tang, sailfin tang and a velvet tang. all of them get along just great. i love tangs.

Personally I think 2 tangs in a 75g is pushing it..esp with the 5 inch sizes...reefman can get away with it as he has the space in his 360g.

2 clowns, a chromis, and a pj cardinal. Any tips or advice on introducing tangs to the same tank?

I kept three Tangs in my old 75g all different species and similar sized, a Yellow, Powder Blue and Kole. The Yellow was a bit of a Butthead to the other Tangs and Wrasses and Hawkfish so did not introduce him into my 125g when setup. I now keep five Tangs in the 60"x24"x20" 125g tank adding a Blochi and Naso I caught in Hawaii plus the newest addition of a small Yellow from my friend Les in Honolulu. If you have kept FW Chiclids it is very similar as to introduction and quantity, meaning only one each of different species added at the same time or having multiples so that aggression is spread out over several fish by a dominant individual (introduced last) In your case, for at least a few years you could add a small Zebrasoma sp like a Yellow or Purple and a small Bristletooth like Kole or Tomini. Small as in 1-2" max so no threat to Hepatus and able to grow up as tank mates. Your Hepatus has really outgrown your 75g already and would be much better off in a larger system, maybe see if you could trade down in size if you don't have plans for a larger system in near future. You are welcome for a visit if you'd like to see how my Tangs interact with each other and tankmates, I'm just up the road in Mill Creek area.

Cheers, Todd

I have a yellow tang and a tomini tang in my 75. They are fine. I do agree that the blue hippo is too big for a 75, or will get to big. The tomini tang and a kole tang and a yellow tang would work in a 75 together. With real good mechanical filtration and slightly larger more regular water changes.

I went and re-measured my blue tang, really hard to get an accurate measurement, but I got somewhere between 4 and 5 inches. So I will say 5 to be safe. The tomini tang I want to get, I re-measured at around 3 inches, so again, I will say 4 to be safe.

I definitely plan to upgrade to a bigger system. For right now, since I didn't introduce them at the same time to grow up together, is it a bad idea to acquire the tomini tang?
Todd, I will definitely come visit! Do you still have my phone number? text me your address.

both the tangs that you have right now are both going to get pretty big. first off the blue hipo tang gets stressed out very easy and gets ich. my buddy just gave me a tennenti tang. he has a 180 gallon and he felt he didnt have enough room for the fish to swim. so thats why he gave it to me. both the tangs you have like to have alot of free space to swim. witch looks like you dont have. you blue hipo tang is going to get 12.2 inches long. the tennenti tang is going to get 10 inches or so. when i buy a fish. i look to see if i can keep it for its whole life. i get attached to my fish and dont want to get rid of them. also look at when you do have to get rid of it. it can cause alot of stress on your fish putting a net in there to catch the fish. if it was me. i would think about buying smaller different kinds of tangs for a 75 gallon tank.

It will be okay to add the tomini. The hippo will be agressive to it for a while, but I find hippos like to have a pal and they will get along fine in no time. I have a blue hippo in qt right now and added a tomini and scopus to the qt with no problems from the hippo.

My goal is to upgrade to at least a 250g display.. as soon as the money rolls in.

it is best to put all your tangs in at the same time. i didnt put all my tangs in at the same time. so adding tangs can be fine if the tang you already have isnt too mean. you are just going to have to take a chance. one may pick on the other so much that it will not eat and then just die if you cant catch him. its kinda up to you if you want to take that chance

reefman, how fast do you think they will grow in the next few years? I do plan to get a bigger tank in the near future. I shifted around rocks to maximize swimming room for my blue tang, but I get what you are saying and will upgrade to a bigger tank. But for now, how much time do you think I have before an upgrade is a must?

i cant really answer that question. i havent had my blue hipo tangs that long. i got them both free from two other people. i have had one of them for 6 months or so. he may have grown a 1/2 inch or so. he is about 9 inches long now. he is non stop swimming. my tank is 8 feet long and 4 feet wide. always swimming around the out side in a big circle
