I just got home to my parents house where my tank is. The water level was down to about 15 gallons (in a 75) The output from my HOT magnum was creating a lot of splashing. This caused some water to splash up on my new (under 2 week old) bulb. The bulb cracked, allowing the unshielded UV to enter the tank. My corals on that side of the tank all died except for a large green brain on the bottom. This is devastating to me because I am still recouperating from a kalkwasser incident that killed all of my sps, save for a few small pieces. Now they are all gone. I had them on that side of the tank thinking they would benefit from the extra flow from the magnum. In total I lost: one purple tip acro,
one large candy cane coral that I have had since the begining, it was about the size of a softball.
One gorgeous montipora capricornis that I got when I won the contest from arizona coral company,
one beautiful piece of xenia. It was pink and pulsed magnificantly. I have never really been a fan of xenia, but this specimen I was glas to have in my tank.
One ultra green hydno frag that was just settling in.
Half of my large pavona is dying; hopefully It wont spread to the rest of the colony.

On the plus side, My anemones are fine and all the fish seem healthy. The halimeda seemed to take the uv like fertilizer and it has taken over my tank. Hopefull I will have enough to trade to the LFS for credit to get some new corals.

I am so bummed out. I have talked to my family before about taking care of my tank when Im not there, but its like they dont realize what it means to me. Im going to see if maybe my parents will pay for the bulb that cracked. I dont think that I can afford another $80 for another one. I am finally resorting to paying my little sister to take care of it. I think Ill pay her one dollar a day to keep the tank filled and feed the fish and anemone.

This really makes me want to move the tank to my house in Ellensburg. I was avoiding it because of all the hassle it would be to move everything, but not I just dont trust my family.

I am so sorry Blenny babe :(

I have a 250W 20K XM Bulb used for about 6months you can have if we can figure a good way to get it to ya.. I am in the seattle/Kirkland area.

WOW,

Sorry to hear what happend - I hope your tank recovers 100%.
This hobby is such a labor of love that I don't think I can trust anyone to take care of it besides me.

I've conflicted on many occasions about staying in the hobby or getting out. It's a sacrifice - you cannot take long trips or ignore the basic husbandry. In return you are rewarded with a piece of nature that is uniquely beautiful.

I think the reason people stay in this hobby is that it reflects the very basic law of life, which is that every effort, care and joy you put into this hobby you get that exact proportionate amount back in visual beauty and self satisfaction that few hobbies can provide right in the comfort of your home.

Hang in there man.

Sorry for your losses, it is something we all have to face from time to time, even the best out there things can happen, hopefully you'll recover as much as you can & keep on reefing.

:(

Well get the tank back up and running and then come on down to one of the meetings and we can all chip in a coral or two and get you back on track.

Rachel - I'm so sorry to hear this! Hang in there!

Thanks for all the kind words. I knew this would be just the place to get some sympathy from people who really understand how much I have labored and saved for this tank. Its my baby. I talked to my dad and hell help me to move it over to ellensburg. For those of you who offered frags, THANK YOU! I will definately have to take you up on that once I get the new tank up and running. I think while I have the tank empty I will see about getting it drilled. That way I can have a sump and finally hook up my calcium reactor. Again thanks for all the support. It really helps to hear your kind words.

No problem Blenny, we will get it back up and shining in no time. In this hobby stuff like this can happen at a moments notice. Keep your chin up and we will a pitch in to get it back up again.

OUch! I just totaled up the value of everything I lost. (I know Im sadistic huh?) Its a grand total of about $285. Thats going to hurt the pocket book a bit. Its going to take a while for everything to get back to normal.
