I just got home to my parents house where my tank is. The water level was down to about 15 gallons (in a 75) The output from my HOT magnum was creating a lot of splashing. This caused some water to splash up on my new (under 2 week old) bulb. The bulb cracked, allowing the unshielded UV to enter the tank. My corals on that side of the tank all died except for a large green brain on the bottom. This is devastating to me because I am still recouperating from a kalkwasser incident that killed all of my sps, save for a few small pieces. Now they are all gone. I had them on that side of the tank thinking they would benefit from the extra flow from the magnum. In total I lost: one purple tip acro,
one large candy cane coral that I have had since the begining, it was about the size of a softball.
One gorgeous montipora capricornis that I got when I won the contest from arizona coral company,
one beautiful piece of xenia. It was pink and pulsed magnificantly. I have never really been a fan of xenia, but this specimen I was glas to have in my tank.
One ultra green hydno frag that was just settling in.
Half of my large pavona is dying; hopefully It wont spread to the rest of the colony.
On the plus side, My anemones are fine and all the fish seem healthy. The halimeda seemed to take the uv like fertilizer and it has taken over my tank. Hopefull I will have enough to trade to the LFS for credit to get some new corals.
I am so bummed out. I have talked to my family before about taking care of my tank when Im not there, but its like they dont realize what it means to me. Im going to see if maybe my parents will pay for the bulb that cracked. I dont think that I can afford another $80 for another one. I am finally resorting to paying my little sister to take care of it. I think Ill pay her one dollar a day to keep the tank filled and feed the fish and anemone.
This really makes me want to move the tank to my house in Ellensburg. I was avoiding it because of all the hassle it would be to move everything, but not I just dont trust my family.
