Tank webcam

A little while back I set up a still-shot cam so I could see my 24 gal reef tank while I was at work. The quality of images from a regular webcam was terrible though, so I found a way to use a "real" digital camera to capture the images. The software I used is VM95 on Win2k. VM95 is free, and there is a link to it on my cam page below.

Unfortunately VM95 only supports some Olympus and Kodak cameras, but that's life. I was able to find a Kodak DC-4800 on Ebay $60 shipped--and for the money, I couldn't be happier with how it looks.

For web-sized stuff the ol' DC-4800 holds up pretty well, and the 28 mm equivalent wide angle setting is great for this kind of shot--I can keep the camera very close to the tank. The small sensor size also gives you deep DOF and very close focus if you want it, both advantages for this kind of picture.

Rick, that's your xenia and candy cane in there... they are doing great.

Thats a great set-up! It got me looking into setting up somethign myself and I think I am going to use a PowerPod to stream video from my DV camcorder.. should be neat.

Neat stuff guys.

I just took down my webcam that I had for my chocolate Lab. I used streaming video using my logitech webcam. I was going to set one up for my fish tank too, but the only thing is I could never find a good, reliable, reasonably priced web hoster. I tried PY software and they were really unreliabile and had really aweful customer support, but they were good priced. I guess that is the tradeoff.
