Jason,

Just wondering if it is possible to save my tank. There is about a 8" long crack that starts in the top brace and comes down into the tank body. Can I just pump in some Weld 16 into the crack and put a clamp on the tank? If you need pictures I can probably post some tomorrow.

Matt

Matt,

I have had some experience with this problem.
1. Drill a .250" hole infront of the split.
2A. Fill with weldon 40 or
2B. 16 a patch of acrylic over the crack.

Causes are either a jacked stand and or a tank that has a substantial amount of stress induced in construction.

Call me if you need assistance,
Jason

Thanks for the quick response. Can I just use a piece of 1/4" and just make sure that both surfaces are clean, or do I need to sand the surfaces that I am bonding and then use the 16?

I also want to get together with you about building my 600.:) I think I finally have all the details to get a solid quote from you. Will you have time next week?

Matt,

I have seen this all too many times. It first starts as fracture on a tight radius corner of a porthole. then lets loose and continues down the face. It happened on a huge tank that Tim was maintaining, as well as many others.
Flame polishing further doesn't help. People don't realize how much stress these tanks need to able to handle. That is why I started to build Extreme Reef Tanks. Tanks that will laugh at the harsh environment that we put them into.
I am excited to help you with your tank, but I just might put you to work if you hang out for any length of time! LOL

You know I am up for the work because it just doesn't seem like work even when your covered in acrylic shavings from a router.

Matt,
We will get you fixed up on that POS one way or another. Have fun this weekend, wish I could be there with ya!

Jason

Well thanks for helping with the repair. Everything turned out perfect. It's a good thing that these POS tanks, from a past tense builder, are only for refugiums. I can't wait to get the 600 up and going. I'm looking forward to working with you on the big boy.

Matt
