Im trying to get a population of copepods going for my mandarin that i plan on getting a couple of months from now. I put about 5 lbs. of rubble rock in my sump to basically try to start a breeding ground for pods. Will that work? I don't have any macro plants or sand in the sump just rubble rock and bare bottom.

get yourself some chaeto too and It will take off like crazy.

if you want a boost, get some pods from OceanPods.com to help kick start the population.

for some reason i can't grow cheato i have tried twice and it just doesn't take off. Some people tell me high flow some people tell me low.

can i breed pods in my display tank..??
i use canister filter...so how..?
i got chaeto in my main tank..inside a plastic container attach to the glass wall..?

I get a small piece of 1/4" pond netting (happen to have a bunch left over from making the lids to my tank) and make it into a pouch by 'sewing' the seam with fishing line.

I fill this up with a bunch of shells, then close the top with fishing line also.

That gives a ton of hiding places for pods, in a protected area that fish can't get into. I keep one of these hidding in my DT where you can't see it.

Also sometimes put one in my fuge for a month or so to let pods move in, then transfer to DT, or to reefers who want a small population of pods to jumpstart things.

i have 3 wrasses and my pods reproduce so fast they all over the glass when i clean it. I use a 20 gallon with a huge ball of cheato and alot of rubble rock.

A few small piles of rubble rock, piled tight enough that fish can't get into it, but pods can get in and out, will create a safe place for pods to reproduce, in your display, without the thread of predation.

WOW, there's a lot of commas in that sentence!!

in the plastic container there is just chaeto.should i add anything else? the plankton stuff..?
there are something white colour..very small..moving on the chaeto..is that pods..?

Why have a pile of rubble in your display tank? Get a hang-on refugium and have a thriving podulation! Leave your main tank for showing off your corals and fish. Adding products from Reef Nutrition work really well and jump start a thriving population with eggs and pods. CPR makes the AquaFuge and EcoSystem makes one similar. They even make them with skimmers built-inn in case you do not have one running on your tank.

hmm..hang on refugium works well..??what should i put in it..? chaeto..?? any additional air stone..? what is cpr bro..?

Could be pods. Probably Amphipods or Mysid Shrimp. If they look to be crawling, probably Amphipods. If it looks to be swimming, probably Mysid Shrimp.

hmm..they crawling..and did mysid shrimp harm anything..?
but very difficul to spot them.

The Mandrin needs to be in the same tank as the rubble, period. There will not be enough transferance to keep it alive without adtitional suplementation. They feed by movement. If it dosen't move it isn't food to them. I have seen them take frozen mysis in an established system but they need the live food to do well. Daily live baby brine is a great supplement.
