I had a post going last week about my red slime algae problem......and just wanted to let everyone know that I just did a 50 percent water change with RO DI water I bought from the store...So far its ok, but as I have been reading everyones post on the tank size and flow forum I want to bump my 20 gal nano up from 375......to like 600-700 GPH. I was hoping to get some advice from all you more experienced reefers. Take into consideration though that my 20 gal nano is glass and not drilled. I am on the fence as to get a canister (cant find one with that much flow, and dont know if I am missing something)...or getting a syphon overflow and setting up a sump/refugium. I also wanted to set it up either way (canister/sump) to have at least three different nozzles hooked up to the output....is that possible?

Any opposition to a plain ol' powerheed? The Seio M620 would work beautifully in your tank. I run two of them in my 38g, and am even considering stepping up to a pair of M820s. 620 gph flow, 8w of power usage. It's a nice, soft flow, so you can get away with more than you would think. I get nice flow throughout my tank.

I also use an AquaClear 70 HOB (hang on back) cascade filter. It puts out 300gph, and I use the media chamber to hold carbon.

Well it isnt completely out of the picture, but i was thinking I could get better filtration with a canister/sump.....But I will definately consider it....I also wanted to put the three nozzles on the output of whatever i get...to kind of focus on dead spots where there isnt much current.....By the way i dont even know where to get that powerhead anyways...but in sure if i looked I could find it.

you probly could get a sump/rgm going, but you need to weigh your opptions here.

is it worth it more to set one up, or 2 just put a power head.

a power head install will be a a hell of a lot less painful. as where a sump install could make headache's

altho
a sump could help out a lot, but then its gonna cost more. you would be geting more volume, (never a bad thing) but your gonna have to spend a lot more money then just a power head.

reserch what you want to get, and how your gonna set it up, where it gonna go, what kind of space lighting, can your skimmer handel the addition.

all thos things

I agree with both Jon and Sherman here...:) Powerheads would be your easiest bet if you just want flow (Seio's being the best for the buck), but if you are looking to kill 2 birds with one stone and want a canister for the simple fact of wanting to run maybe some carbon, then I'd go with something like a Magnum350 canister filter or the H.O.T Magnum canister filter. They both come with a nozzle you can point in a few different directions and angles in your tank. Sumps are always good and would help out a lot by adding more volume to the tank which equals more stability amongst other things, but you will have to buy a few items to get one plumbed into your system.:)

Here's the H.O.T Magnum (250 gph) which hangs on the tank.

well I am starting to like the idea of adding a powerhead more, and more....however if i get a canister I think it would help with filtration a lot more and that cant hurt..at least I dont think it would hurt.....since as far as filtration goes I am simply running an Aquaclear powerfilter that runs at 200 GPH.....but let me know what you think the filter I have now is pretty simple, but I have had it running on that tank forever and it seems to work fine....

The Seio's don't sweep, but in any event, it's not necessary. They give you a wide stream like a Tunze, which provides great coverage. As for the canister, I don't use any, but that doesn't mean there is something wrong with using one. Your live rock and skimmer (if you are using one) as well as your weekly water changes will take care of your tank for you. All a matter of personal opinion what you should go with:)

The biggest thing to be concerned about with using a canister filter is making sure you clean it regularly. They can trap a lot of detrites that can throw your water params all out of wack. I know some use them more like a carbon reactor and remove all the filter pads etc.

Definately...Thus the reason I don't use any canisters. Too much up keep:)

I'll third that. It's personal preference in the end, but I wouldn't use a canister filter. The Aquaclear will work wonderfully for holding your carbon, and if it really comes down to it, stuff some filter floss in it to pick up a little more crud. However, it will become a nitrate factory, so you will want to clean it quite often. Even my carbon, I rinse out weekly, or so.

Your rock and skimmer should provide all the filtration you need, in theory.

all right thanks for all the advise people I think i will be getting the seio.....sounds like that is really the best idea at this time.

LOL! You'll be surprised at what that powerhead puts out! Let us know how it goes and don't forget, they cn be mounted similar to a Tunze where they put out the most flow and not have to sit enclosed in the housing it comes with like how Sherman as his mounted...I'll fetch a pic:)

Well im excited to se what kind of a difference it will make for sure....I will have to dink round with it to see what will work the best.
