I am just about done with trying to use the advanced search feature. I can never find anything, even when I know what I’m looking for. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Most of the time I try to search for something it says no results. What’s going on??

Sorry if I put this in the wrong place.
I have tried playing around with it off and on and never really figured it out since the new format. I have tried in several ways to find things I knew were on the site and the results will always come up with nothing so I can only assume I’m missing something important. For example I did a search for a post I did and since it was back 6 months ago it proved very time consuming looking threw all the posts I made.

The way I was trying to find the information was check the box labeled posts
Enter the keyword or words I am looking for in the keyword box
I tried with or with out entering my user name in the user name box.
I don’t know what a tag is so I just left it blank
Click search since I don’t have any more specific information for additional options that I can be sure of.

I’ve tried many different common and uncommon keywords of things I know are on the site and each time I click search I get nothing. No results found every time.

Well the one I was getting frustrated with yesterday was about UV sterilizers. I was looking for a thread that DonW and myself had posted in but we did not start the thread. I tried different combinations of phrases including UV that I believe I would have had in the series of posts. I also tried just UV or uv and nothing pops up. Every time I have tried to do a search now it just says no results found. I tried selecting posts only made by me or DonW and nothing comes up, at least when I was trying yesterday.

I also haven't had much luck with the search here. I'll post examples next time I have issues.

Another thing you can try is to search this site using google, so lets say you want your name, don and UV

search google with the following:
don ac7av uv site:reeffrontiers.com

it comes up with several thread that about UV that you and don are involved in. Hope that helps

If people are having problems with the search, its pretty easy to imbed google into the site, right?

I also have found the advanced search to usually not help me find what I'm looking for (which is usually a specific thread.)

Google always seems to come through painlessly.

Hmmm...You know I hardly ever use that feature. I have a pretty good memory that I can usually find whatever I need to. I've messed with the advanced search feature a few times though and I think you have to be pretty specific to find what you are looking for. In addition to that, I may be wrong, but I think when you place tags on a thread, it makes it easier to search for later using the advanced search feature. :)

Was this the thread Erik?? http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/f36/who-uses-uv-sterilizer-59500/#post605143 or was it the thread you were referring to when you posted this..

DanW, I believe it was you what caused me to start using UV because of any article you posted years ago about it. I believe you reposted it not to long ago. It has great information about UV and what it will do under the correct conditions. I remember a comparison picture of a green tank before and after a week of use. You would never believe the difference. The tank after a week was crystal clear. If I can find it I will re post it

Well I have a good memory of the time but a little digging with my slow internet takes some times hours.

I think that is it or another one about the same time but I will look threw it after a while. I just happened to stop by the house for lunch today. Thanks krish.

How does the Google search work for looking up things on RF?

I am not sure if this is your problem or not but did you make sure you clicked on the "and Older" which is under Additional options??

Ok I keep trying it and it seems to work for me, Were you guys doing like I wrote above??

No, I just left it like it was because I didn’t really know the date and I figured the “any date” would over ride any specific date entered wether it said before or after.

I will give that a try and see if that helps.

Ok here is the situation. in the advanced search window it comes with a bunch of options. The date options are located uder the Additional Options. The default is to search from your last visit and the next box is defaulted to "and Newer" Soooo basically it is going to search from today to today?? Nice eh!!!!:smash:

So what you have to do is to change that from the above to "and Older" then before you seach go to the bottom of the screen and hit the "save search preferences" this will make it so from now on you will search that way.

I of course picked up on it right away :der::rolleyes: but it is hard to see that and it is completely brain dead. SO welcome to my world in VB
