I know some people incorporate a valve for water changes into their system. If you've done this can you tell me how you did it? I was thinking about drilling a hole in the back wall of my tank toward the bottom and plumbing it with a ball valve.

Thanks,

Drain plumbing

That will definately work. Instead of making more hols I just was sure to put a ball valve after the union fitting on my closed loop pump. This way I could drain water by just clsing the valve, un-hooking the pump and so on... must be 50 ways from Sunday to do it though..

One quick note: It's a good idea in my experience to always have pvc plugs handy that fit any holes in the tank in case of a failure down stream ;)

Gordo I have a 6 gallon acrylic tube. I call it a water change reactor. Hooked up to a powerhead in the sump. Fill with fresh SW and turn on, the fresh goes out the old goes in, shut it off dump and refill. Not sure that was to clear. Never have to shut down the system. Takes one minute to do a 6 gallon water change.

You can always put a T on your return line with a ball valve, unless you don't have a sump : / A T with a barb fitting to a hose, just a turn of the wrist and your water is drained out (the top of the T being paralell to the line and the stem being perpedicular with the valve attatched to it). Then just pump new water in to sump from near by cans.
