Tank size 47.4 gallons
blue damsel
skunk clown
reg. clown
tube coral
sarcophyton of some sorts
3 hitchiker clams

Temp. 77.5
pH 7.8
SG 1.024-1.025
Nitrate 40 ppm
Nitrite 0-.5 ppm (mg/l)
Alk 180 (KH) ppm
Hardness 300 ppm? red (freshwater test)
Ca2+ 460 mg/l (ppm)
Ammonia .25 ppm (mg/l) down from last night which was at stress level

I did a 9+ gallon water change yesterday

It seems that things are just a bit off for just doing a water change, aren't they?

Looks like the tank is cycling for some reason. Anything die or get added too quickly to the system? Did the initial cycle finish?

Anne typically you should never have any ammonia or nitrite show up on a test kit. Unless the tank is still cycling. Also your nitrate is very high. You probably want to do a 50%. When you changed you water did you disturb your sand bed at all? That can sometimes cause a small cycle. Was the water you put in the same temp as the water in the tank?

Yes I did have to--some red stuff was on it and I used the siphon to vacuum it out. I did bump the salinity up from 1.024 (steady). I don't know if it was a red sponge growing on the sand or some cyano.

What were they before the change?
76.7 F
1.024 SG (steady)
300 ppm Alk (KH)
300 ppm (GH)
0-.5 nitrite
40 mg/l nitrate
7.8 ph
0 ammonia
400 mg/l (ppm) calcium

Call me awful--but don't remember exactly when this test was done. It has to be within the last 2-3 days.

Temp 78.8
SG 1.024
ammonia .25 (test says safe limit)
Nitrates 20 ppm
Nitrites 0
pH 8.4

At this time I changed the penguin filter and the filter media of the fluval. Took all sponges out of filters and gave them a good rinse in used saltwater.

I find myself getting into the bad habit of testing and not putting time date and results down.(

This last water change I did replace the water kind of fast and not quite at tank temp. SG was also a little higher as well and I did have some pretty good temp swings.
