Would like to find out if anyone is mixing their own saltwater using their well water. I have hard well water and was wondering about it instead of buying a RO/DI setup. Has anyone done this and what checks did you test for with your well.

I did, I now use an Ro unit. I talked with thefilterguys.com on the phone. They were awesome, and did not upsale me at all.
I had the water tested and everything looks good at about 35ppm tds, mostly iron. I still had a fair bit of algae growth until I added the Ro.
It is a pretty inexpensive part of the hobby and can help you avoid a lot of pain. Even testing now will not give you an accurate "feel" for your water.
The water in your well can change content depending on the season, so for what it is worth, get the insurance.

I would agree with Todd on this one. With the ever changing parameters of your water system it would be a good idea to get one. I am not saying that it is necessary, just a good reason to get one. If you did not get one you would have to watch your water closely.

I just recently went over this since i have great water from the tap. But after a lot of research and discussion I purchased a "build your own" ro system from bulkreefsupply.com. I went with just the ro, no di. I think i paid with shipping like $160 for a 4 stage ro at 75 gallons per day. (it would have been less but i added a pressure guage, flush kit, and faucet adapter)

If you drink this water it is good enough for your tank. I would filter it through charcoal --- I do. I have an R/O unit and make a gallon or two a year for my batteries. If the water is hard, it has minerals dissolved in it and the ocean has a lot of minerals in it. If I take all the minerals out I just have to put them back in, so I use my tap water. MY fish have strong bones and good teeth !
