I'm not sure if this is an algae or not but it is in my fuge. (Sorry but no pics) Anyways its a pinkish redish color and has long strans connected to it. It almost looks like dead long hair algae if that is even possible. Anyways so far its only in the fuge and hasn't made it to the tank. I haven't tested my tank in a few weeks so that may tell me why i am getting this but does anyone know how to kill it? My fuge has a pinkish hue to it and i want to get rid of it.

Also i cleaned my fuge about 3 weeks ago and it had only been running for a month and was completely full of algae. Now it has been almost a month and i have hardly any algae in there? Whats going on?

Thanks,

Nick

It's not cyno huh Nick? I had it growing in my sump before that made the sump look redish/pink. I'll look through some of my old threads and see if I can find you a pic. BRB:)

does it look like cotton candy? there is a pink/reddish algae that I got in my sump that was more like cotton candy and definitely was not cyano. the way i got rid of it was to put 2 mexican turbo snails in the sump and within 3 days it was spotless. make sure they are mexican turbo snails or else they won't eat it.

Here is a picture I found on another web site....this is the stuff I was referring to. It's not like cyano which is more of a slime type algae. I think they call this algae Asparagopsis which is a red cotton candy type fluffy algae. It's a pain to get rid of but like I mentioned above *true* Mexican turbo snails will eat it.

No its not lik that. its very flat and has a few very long strands. Almost like a cob web.

Thanks though,

Nick

Geesh!!I tell you. It's hard to find whereI put photos sometimes(LOL) I have them saved on my computer I'm pretty sure so I'll look when I get home, but here's what I did find. You can't see it all that good, but an idea. I'll get you some better ones later:)

If it's not like that, does it look like this?

anotrichiumbarbatum.jpg

If it is Anotrichium barbatum, it's a bear to deal with. Mexican turbos and urchins are your best friend. It's an algae that can live in very low nutrient water.

Well its not like either one to be honest. I have a picture on my phone but i can't put it on the computer. I was looking at it today and it is gross looking. It looks like a dark redish broen color andstarting to grow all over the fuge. Now i am starting to see some very wierd algae growing in the tank on the overflows. It almost looks transparent. I see it moving in the current. I am worried about all of this algae. I am thinking about stripping mu fuge down and starting from scratch. I am also thinking about cutting down the amount of time that my lights are on in the main tank. The last thing i want is a huge bad algae bloom in my tank! If any of you guys have a cingular camera phone i can try and send you a picture of this stuff. I know i've seen it before but i don't remember. I want to get rid of all of this stuff (algae). I honestly think my problem is my lack of water changes.

I second the Mexican Turbo Snails. They have proven to eat all the "dark red stringy hair and fuzz algae" that has been a weed in any and all tanks that I have seen them in. It may take a week or two, but they are voracious scavengers when they are comfortable in the tank.

BTW, this is after I tried every possible solution in getting rid of this algae. Now when I get coral or rock from anywhere, these snails always go into QT with them and within a few days the algae has been stripped clean.

Don't get too many though, because they will starve to death after the algae is gone... unless you want to supplement food for them.

Well i am going to my LFS today to get my water tested and i am goin to show him what i am dealing with. Whatever it is i want it dead or gone like yesterday. I will lok into the whole snail thing too.

I think this all being caused by my tap water top off.
