today i awoke to this:

pompom.jpg

any ideas what caused my pom pom to bleach overnight and also end up with black lines running up some of it's arms?

the only thing i've done in the past 2 days that is out of the ordinary is add some top off water that my RO unit created. The TDS tested at 2.

i tested my pH and it was at 8.3, salinity is a little high though at 1.026, nitrates/nitrites are 0, alk is 9.0 / 3.2, calcium is 430, mag. is at 1300

any ideas would be appreciated.

i plan to do a water change tomorrow. i'm making RO water tonight that is testing at 1 TDS and using Instant Ocean.

Hmmmm your parameters look pretty good bud. Xynia are weird things, and will go off for a lot of reasons. I would try a little more flow on it.

it's still pulsing and all. it closed up last night but this morning it opened back up. it doesn't act sick but it looks sick! i'll try a little more flow around it and see how that goes. hopefully the water change will help.

woops

i forgot about something else i did the past few days. i ran carbon for a few days. i wonder if somehow i didn't cleanse the carbon well enough and some of the black residue was absorbed by the xenia. think that is a possibility? if so hopefully it will just pass it through the system with time.

what do you have on them for lighting? I had the same thing happen a few weeks back. I went out of state for 9 days and new if I ran my MH's I would have no water left in my tank. ( I have no auto top off) So I put some CF's on and when I got back my Xeina looked bad and I had a frilly schroom that spontaneously combusted. .. no joke just a little red slime algae ring were he used to be :(

Now everything is back to normal with my MH's back up.

i've been running metal halides (175w) for the past few months. i haven't changed the light cycle or anything. from what i read xenia's are just 'crazy' sometimes.

the only thing i can thing of are:
1. running carbon that i didn't cleanse well. the xenia is the only thing that has black ingested in it and doesn't well. all my corals, my clam, my clown and all look fine.
2. i just bought an ro/di unit that was used. i put in some top off water that had TDS around 2.

not sure what else it could be.

apparently my xenia got over whatever was wrong with it. it has returned back to original color and size.

it did look cool but it didn't look healthy :) it still has a little black in the main stalk but that is it. weird on whatever caused it.
