Depending on the depth of placement, most anything. Softys anywhere, hard corals nearer the top. Make sure the bulbs stay fresh if sps.

The only thing I'd be worried about doing a 400w over a 55gallon is light dispersement.

1 400w is definately cheaper than doing 2 250ws (consider maintanence, electricity draw, etc), but light displacement is a concern because you'll have lots of light in some places and shadows in others.

May want to consider one of those tracks that the lights can move on throughought the day. That way you can make sure you cover your whole tank - just a thought..

I went with 2 250s b/c i wanted a more even look, but it's all personal preference in this hobby. it's whatever you think looks the best - remember that and good luck in your decision. :D

also the most inportent part is that the 400watt will heat that room quite nicely.

think of all the money you will save by switching to.................

If you read the post he said 400 watts of pc lighting not Metal halide. I owuld be concerned about the amount of heat they give off but other than that you should be able to grow about anything. What type of pc lighting is it? How many bulbs and what wattage are they?

Something to consider
Bulb replacement costs.
4 96 watt p.c bulbs of good quality are more than two 250 wt M.H. bulbs of good quality.
Also they dont last near as long as you would think they should.
At least thats my experince.

I would do 2- 250w over a 55 before 2-400's 400w will give you heat issues in a 55. With 250w you can keep anything. One 400 will not cover your tank.

Again no one seems to be reading the original message. He asked what he could keep with 400 watts of PC LIGHTING not MH. Everyone keeps going off track with the metal halides....

OK I would still do 2 250w MH lights over a 55.:D
But to answer your question. Still anything. just keep SPS high.

:D Not trying to sound mean brenden. Just trying to stay on the subject. He asked what he could keep with the PC Lighting and everyone keeps saying to go Metal Halide. I agree they would be best but it looks like he already has the pc lighting versus going out and buying Metal Halides..

pc's dont know

what are pc's?

do t5's come in length more then 48"?

Brendon, you are right, He probably shouldn't be using 2 of the 400 watt MHs, better if he switched to 400 watts of PC just to be safe. Then he could grow almost antthing if placed well...

(Just screwing with prbhasson:badgrin:  )

Thanks Mike. Everyone missed my point. 800 watts of MH is just to much for a 55.:D Well my feelings have been hurt now. I am going to go call FedEx. Just messing with you prbhasson ;)

Yeah its power compacts i got 2 actinics and 2 1000k, 96watts all four, but my luck just ran out cuz yesterday my icecap 660 ballast blew up, something burnt insde. i think i still have warranty.
heating is not an issue, i made an enclosure for it and the fan works awesome!! one problem though, the lighting is not as blue as i want.
