I was wondering what peoples preferences are for mounting coral frags. Might be useful information to coral farmers, and to people starting new setups with frags.

I personally don't like plastic or acrylic plugs. I think they are ugly and unnatural first of all. Also, the plastic plugs usually have odd shapes that don't fit between rock as tightly, and from my experience seems harder for corals (especially soft corals) to encrust/attach.

I selected live rock or live rock rubble. I always just glued my frags right to the rock. In the case of something like a gorgonian, I'd either look for a hole to push it in and glue or drill my own hole. Personally I don't really like the look of plugs. :)

Probably should have added tile also. I'm new to the whole poll posting thing, and Krish has been walking me through it. I would totally authorize him to make any changes that he can if anybody needs a new option. I'm not sure how much mods are capable of, but we realized that the voting options cannot be edited by the general public after posting, only the wording of the post.

I like to glue pieces directly to live rock when I can, but certain LPS and SPS I like to put way up on the frag rack until it is healed and growing, and in that case I prefer the aragonite plugs. After the plugs are encrusted, I cut off the mount part of the plug and glue the whole thing to a larger rock or wedge it in a crack.

I added ceramic plugs in for you, but that leaves you with no more options available to add anymore. You must have to select 8 from the "get go". :)

Yes, on adding ceramic & tile to the list of options. Like Krish I have no liking for plugs in my DT so prefer LR rubble or tumbled natural stone tiles if not attaching to main LR. As far as frags to sell/buy attached to 1x1 tumbled marble/travertine/limestone is much much much preferable to any std plug. They are very easy to reshape and attach to LR. AND only $8-$10 for 144 pcs at your local Lowes or ?

My buddy came up with a great way. He cuts sps off flush with his dremel then uses the dremel to bore a 1/4 deep hole in the end and inserts a little piece of stainless rod with super glue. The rod is easy to fit in a hole in the LR and stays put with a dab of superglue.
We are going to do a HD youtube video when I get the chance to film him in action.

That's good to know! I don't have anybody close that sells actual frag plugs, and end up ordering them off ebay. I need some, so I guess I will be visiting Lowes.

That's a great idea, let us know when the video goes up!

thats a great idea. could do it with an acrylic rod too? Then you could just cut a piece with scissors...

I prefer live rock/rubble if I have them laying around.

Occasionally I'll use diagonal cutters to trim a disc down so that it's as small as possible and glue it to a rock. I've tried this with a few rocks in hopes of starting a Zoa or Ric "garden".
