i have a 30gal and i would like to start adding some coral, what kind would be a good first coral (kinda easy to take care of and get used to the whole coral thing)

i have one 250w 10,000k MH on the tank and one blue actinic

I think the Toadstool leather (Sarcophyton trocheliophorum) Would be a good coral to start off with.Im sure there are many others that just came to mind hope that helps.

Both the Montipora and Porites sp. are good starters for hard corals. Christmas tree worm rocks (Porites w/boring worms) are very hardy and make an interesting addition.

firsy off i would think you should determine what you want to keep? softies, lps, sps? according to anthony calfo you shouldn't mix sps and the others, you are asking for troubles in the battle zone with toxins and so forth, especially in a 30 gal tank which well be pretty close quarters. also if you are wanting sps or even lps you really have to start watching calc.,alk., mag.,and water chem. alot more closely as i have found out then with softies.
